Our students never cease to amaze us. Their determination and ability to absorb knowledge inspire everyone around them. This week, we reflect on how building self-esteem and confidence, combined with curiosity-driven projects, unlocks their full potential. These qualities are not just traits but essential tools for lifelong learning and success.
Cultivating Curiosity and Inspiration from Retro Tech
Our students derive immense inspiration from their exploration of retro technology, discovering the stories behind the technology and the inspiration that those stories provided to our staff. "Powered by the happiness of childhood nostalgia".
This week we have been exploring the stories and innovation associated with the much loved Commodore Company, who after a 30 year gap, are back making new and exciting computers.




This week, we have been exploring, repairing and using Commodore machines spanning almost 50 years - 1970s to 2026.
Engaging with these vintage computing systems allows students to connect with the history of technology, develop a foundational knowledge of computing while developing valuable computing skills. Here are some key aspects of their inspiration:

By using Commodore equipment, students gain insight into the evolution of computing. This historical perspective fosters a deeper appreciation for modern technology and encourages them to think critically about the advancements that have shaped our digital world.

The Power of Self-Esteem in Learning
Self-esteem shapes how students view their abilities and challenges. When students believe in themselves, they approach tasks with a positive mindset, ready to tackle difficulties rather than avoid them. This confidence encourages risk-taking in learning, which is essential for growth.
For example, initially our students think that the prospect of repairing a computer is well beyond their skills. But as we jointly discuss and work through the process, the task suddently becomes less daunting. A series of relatively simple steps and as part of that we discuss how complex problems in life can be broken down into simple steps and with help we can together achieve great things.
Building self-esteem creates a foundation where students feel safe to explore new ideas without fear of failure.

The early commodore computers use a 6502 processor which is a relatively simple design to understand. Comprehension of concepts are accelerated when a student builds their own 6502 computer from scratch and uses tools such as an oscillosope to see how it all works.

Confidence and curiosity work hand in hand. When students feel capable, they are more likely to ask questions and seek deeper understanding. Curiosity fuels motivation, making learning an active and enjoyable process.

We have so many stories to tell based on our engagement with our students that inspire us all - staff and students alike.

Overcoming the fear of failure - a student who joined us refusing to read or write is now the proud owner of a Certification that is recognised by employers.
Turning neuro diversity into a power rather than a constraint - many students who hyper focus on specific topics can use those skills to develop a deep understanding of complex systems
Discovering ways of learning - overcoming barriers that previously held them back that now accelerate future successes.
Sharing successes and communicating with peers - many students join us a shy and often defensive individuals. Individual successes are contagious and when shared with others accelerate and inspire others.
Mentoring and developing career pathways - we have grown our staff with ex students who are now mentoring others and inspring the next generation of students. Leading by example and sensitive to the challenges that they face.
